Keira* and her family were managing well, with Keira and her partner, David*, focused on raising their children while David provided a steady income. Despite facing typical challenges, life was generally positive. However, everything changed when David suddenly passed away due to a medical emergency.

Keira was left devastated and overwhelmed, unsure of how to support her children as a single mother without a job and limited family assistance. Initially connected with a Community Friend for emotional support, Keira also sought assistance in accessing death benefits for her child. Diane*, a dedicated Alongside volunteer known for navigating complex bureaucratic processes, stepped in to help. According to Diane, "The journey ended up taking many twists and turns including dealing with state agencies, (a legal aid organization), finding an attorney, fundraising for attorney fees, going to court, and getting a judge to issue a paternity order."

After ten months of persistent effort, the death benefits were approved, providing crucial financial stability for Keira and her family! Regarding the numerous hours she dedicated to this cause, Diane says, "My ability to work through all the issues came from God. What we did for this mom was not anything one state or federal agency could do. God enabled me to be the lead on this task, but it took a community to get it done."

Now, Keira is gradually finding peace in her grief and is occupied with caring for her children. She has formed meaningful connections within Alongside Families, receiving encouragement and support. Transitioning from feeling helpless to setting goals, Keira aims to obtain a driver's license, secure a stable job, arrange childcare, and move to a safer home. She's looking forward to being able to save money for her family's future. With the ongoing assistance of her Alongside support system, Keira is ready to embark on the next chapter of her journey!
