At Alongside Families, we talk a lot about family preservation. But what does that actually mean?
At its simplest, family preservation means helping biological families stay safely together. It means surrounding parents and children with support so foster care does not become the only option.
But true family preservation is more than just preventing foster care. That is why Alongside Families believes in holistic family preservation.
Holistic Family Preservation looks at the whole family and says,
“You were not meant to carry this alone.”
It recognizes that parents and children have physical, emotional, relational, and spiritual needs, and that true family care pays attention to all of them.
Here are three principles that guide holistic family preservation at Alongside Families:
1. We see community as essential, not optional.
At Alongside Families, we believe God created humans to thrive within community. That is not just a nice idea. It is central to our ministry.
Social isolation deeply impacts families. When a parent does not have safe, supportive people to call in a crisis, small problems can become emergencies. Many of us have friends, family, church community, or neighbors who step in when life gets hard. Many vulnerable families do not.
The majority of child welfare hotline calls, around 70% of which nationwide are due to child neglect caused by poverty or a family crisis rather than due to child abuse, can be prevented by surrounding isolated families with supportive community.
Holistic family preservation helps build that missing support system through both practical help and committed relationships.
Practical help matters. A meal, a ride, a safe home, groceries, diapers, or childcare make a meaningful difference. Sometimes practical support is what keeps a hard week from becoming a crisis.
At the same time, for families to truly move from crisis to thriving, practical help must be paired with long-term relationship. Our goal is not simply to step in, fix a problem, and disappear. Our hope is to help isolated families become connected to committed community. That kind of support can contribute to healing, resilience, and stability long after the immediate crisis has passed.
2. We serve the whole person.
Holistic family preservation recognizes that families need more than physical safety. They need healing, hope, and belonging. This is why our work is both practical and spiritual.
We want to help families stay intact during hard times. We want to prevent unnecessary foster care placements. We want to support parents and protect children. We also want families to experience the love of Christ through the faithful care of His people and the good news of the gospel.
We believe that true family preservation goes far beyond simply keeping children out of the foster care system and with their biological parents. Although that aspect of family preservation is vitally important, family preservation includes healing, redemption, and wholeness for families. Family preservation looks beyond today and aims to impact families for generations to come and into eternity.
3. We see the Church as the frontline intervention.
At Alongside Families, our staff team is not the center of the story. Our role is to connect isolated families with local churches that have a heart to keep families together and build long-term supportive relationships.
The deepest need most vulnerable families have is steady, relational care. Local churches are uniquely positioned to offer this kind of care. Not because churches have perfect people or easy answers, but because God’s people are called to love their neighbors and carry one another’s burdens.
We equip and mobilize the Church to do what the Church is uniquely called to do: live out the Great Commandment and the Great Commission. Our partner churches do not come alongside an agency to help meet a need. We come alongside our partner churches to support them in their ministry as they serve on the front lines caring for hurting families.
Final thoughts
Holistic family preservation is more than crisis response; it is a vision for families to be held, strengthened, and restored within the compassionate community God designed them for. It reminds us that when families are surrounded by steady love, practical support, and the hope of Christ, even the hardest seasons can become places where healing begins.
