Changing the Trajectory

Opportunity. That’s the word that comes to mind as I consider the enormous need in Greater Charlotte to proactively care for vulnerable families. It isn’t so much that the Church should engage in family preservation; it’s that we get to do this. We are being invited by the local government and key service providers to be the first responders keeping families out of the foster care system. What a privilege!

One of our Host Families was recently asked how they saw God at work in their hosting. They said, “He brought joy to us through a 4-year-old.” Joy. This is often a challenging ministry that calls us to wade into broken, weary places. But as we follow Christ out of obedience into these places, we get to taste the abundant life that He intends for us and see Him show up in ways we never could have dreamed. We get to do this.

So, how can you seize this opportunity?

Here are 5 ways you can change the trajectory for a struggling family this year:

  1. Commit now to host a child or befriend a parent at least once a quarter this year. Set this as a ministry discipline that is scheduled in your calendar and a life priority. Pray weekly for the families you will serve. Then be ready to respond!

  2. Become a monthly donor. We need consistent, predictable financial support to allow us to grow this ministry.

  3. Take the first step to becoming a volunteer. Attend a 30-minute interest meeting. These are held every 2nd and 4th Monday of the month at 6pm. Register here.

  4. Help us partner with your church. If your church isn’t already an Alongside Families partner, please reach out to us! Emily@alongsidefamilies.org

  5. Join our Support Line volunteer team: We need volunteers covering shifts on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday. This is a vital role in our ministry and a meaningful way to serve remotely. Sign up here
